A.G's Office Says Proposed County Raise Not Allowed

The Texas Attorney General's office says Smith County would have to declare an emergency to give a raise to the county's budget officer.
The court on Monday tabled a proposal to give budget officer Jeff Clark a $15,000 raise as well as add a new employee to his office.
The Texas Attorney General's office says since the budget has been passed Smith County would have to declare an emergency to give the raise or add an employee.
The Texas Association of Counties agreed with the Attorney General and went even further in its' opinion saying the proposal did not qualify as an emergency.
Despite the Attorney General's opinion, Commissioner Sharon Emmert, who introduced the proposed raise, says she'll continue to work on other alternatives to get Clark his raise.
