Longview ISD board makes no decision about superintendent

Horace Williams is the Lone Finalist for LISD superintendent Horace Williams is the Lone Finalist for LISD superintendent
LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - Nearly a month after he was named as the lone finalist to become Longview ISD's superintendent, Horace Williams, and LISD families are still waiting for a decision.

The school board met Tuesday night and left without an announcement about Williams' future at Longview ISD. Williams was named the lone finalist for the position on May 21. There is a minimum 21 day waiting period after a lone finalist is named before he can be hired.

A small crowd of people gathered at the meeting and said they would continue attending school board meetings until a superintendent was named.

"My heart is with these children. I didn't come regularly when I was teaching because I was busy trying to do school work," says Madolyn Scott, a retired Longview ISD teacher. Scott says she now spends a majority of her time making sure Longview ISD becomes a top school in East Texas. She and other community members believe Horace Williams can help make that happen.

"Every one of his previous employers has stated that he was a great superintendent and he advanced their district," says Branden Johnson, president of the Longview NAACP chapter.

Johnson says the first step in making Longview a better school district will come with getting a school board that can make a decision, "There are a couple that say they are completely against, they've told me that there's information that came out since they selected him as a lone finalist. Then, there were some that I spoke to that said, 'We had all of this information.'"

LISD School Board President Dr. Troy Simmons says the board is on the same page; they want what's best for their students, "If you look hard enough with any candidate, you can find enough to criticize them. That's not what this process is about. This process is trying to find someone that will benefit your district and do for the kids what needs to be done."

Simmons says people should not be so quick to judge Williams or the school board because the process they are going through is dictated by law.

Concerns were raised about Williams after controversy developed surrounding his departure from Cedar Hill ISD.

LISD board president Troy Simmons said the decision to name Williams as lone finalist was unanimous.

The current superintendent, James Wilcox, is retiring.

Another meeting will be scheduled to discuss the position.
