MaxPreps names Mahomes athlete of the year

WHITEHOUSE, TX (KLTV) - MaxPreps has named Whitehouse graduate Patrick Mahomes the 2013/2014 Male Athlete of the Year.

Mahomes shined in three sports during his senior season. The Wildcats quarterback was named the AP Texas State Football Player of the Year.  He was the District 16-4A MVP in basketball. Mahomes was also a late selection in the Major League Baseball Draft.

Back in May, Whitehouse head football coach Adam Cook called Mahomes one of the best he's ever coached.

"I have been blessed to be around some great athletes," said Cook.  "Some have gone on to play in the professional ranks. But never one that was able to balance all the different sports. To still be able to come out and compete at such a high level like he does, but not only on the field but then also in the class room."

Mahomes thanks his teammates.

"It helps being on great teams at Whitehouse," said the senior quarterback and pitcher.  "It helps playing with my friends and we go out there and get a lot wins. That helps out with getting athlete of the year."

Mahomes has signed with Texas Tech where he will play football and baseball next season.

According to Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, Whitehouse will finish second in 17-5A this coming season. We'll see how it all shakes out, but the good news is, the Wildcats appear to be district title contenders once again. Since winning 12 games in 2013, head coach Adam Cook and company have racked up a total of 13 victories the past three seasons.
