Lindale police warn of new phone scam sweeping the area

Posted: Updated:
LINDALE, TX (KLTV) - The Lindale Police Department is offering a warning to residents of East Texas about what they are calling an outbreak of scam phone calls.

On their Facebook page, the police department said that groups of men have been calling various numbers in East Texas, telling the person on the other end of the line that they are either federal agents, or members of a Federal Texas police force. They continue by telling the person that they have won a sum of money, or have applied for a grant.

Police say that the caller will try to get your personal information, or will ask you to send money to secure a funds transfer to your bank or to you, directly. Some of these callers have begun a verbally abusive tirade with those who say no, or will continue to call back.

Police say you should not answer your phone once you find that you've been contacted by one of these "scammers." Just hang up and continue to do so when the calls continue. They say you should never engage in conversation or arguments; just hang up.
