HOPKINS COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -
Texas Rangers are investigating after shots were fired during a high speed chase across two East Texas counties.
The pursuit began in Wood County late Monday afternoon, ending about seven miles outside of Pickton in Hopkins County.
Tammy Shimer's mother told her she had seen some of what led up to the scene. "The sheriff's department went flying by the house with lights and stuff on..said it was supposed to be a chase or something."
Tonya Carden was trying to drive through the area when she was stopped by all of the law enforcement activity. When she was cleared to drive through, she saw the end result of what sent the suspect in the chase to the hospital. The car in the ditch with bullet holes in it shocked her. She said that she talked to a man who drove up to the scene with lots of questions.
"I spoke to him and I asked him if it is a relative of yours. We were thinking car accident. He said yes, it was his son. We asked if we could put him on our prayer list and he said yes, he'd appreciate that," she said.
The suspect was airlifted after officers stopped his vehicle. The suspect's injuries are unknown at this time.
The Texas Rangers are investigating what happened. Tammy and Tonya have one main thing on their minds. "We are praying for the young man and his family and we hope everything is ok."
