MINEOLA, TX (KLTV) -
A Mineola teen is dead after an argument at a convenience store turned violent. According to police, 19-year-old Christopher James Griffin was shot after a verbal altercation at EZ Mart on North Pacific Street in Mineola around 11:30 p.m. Sunday.
The man now charged with Griffin's murder is 41-year-old Jason Russell Walters, also of Mineola. Monday, Griffin's family requested privacy so they could grieve, but on Facebook, those who were close to him were expressing their pain.
Police say an argument that started inside the convenience store spilled into the alley behind the store. Police say when they arrived, they found Griffin laying in the alley with a gunshot wound to his neck. Authorities say Walters was still standing nearby holding a gun. However, Griffin's friends insist Griffin was not the one arguing with Walters. Tuesday, Mineola Police issued a correction saying Griffin was not involved in the argument inside the store, however the police chief would not take phone calls or answer any questions.
Monday, crime scene tape on the ground in they alley reminded Mineola citizens of what happened there last night. The gas station clerk says the initial argument between the men was caught on camera, but the business has been ordered by police not to let anyone see the video.
The Mineola Police Department says they're not answering any questions about the investigation-- including whether or not the men knew each other, what they were fighting about or if they'd had run-ins with the law before.
Neighbors of the accused shooter say he's a father of two, a Marine, a Mineola native and seemed like a stand-up guy, which is leaving a lot people wondering why this happened.
An ambulance did rush Griffin from the scene to the Mineola Civic Center where he was supposed to be transported into a helicopter and then flown to a hospital. However, he died from those injuries before they could get him there.
