SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - A Smith County child was sent to the hospital after being injured in a barn fire.

The fire happened Saturday afternoon on Spillway Road just off of County Road 370 in Smith County. According to the fire marshal's office, a 10-year-old, 7 year-old and 6 year-old were playing with matches in their neighbor's barn and accidentally caught his hay on fire.

The boys, who are brothers, told the fire marshall they tried to put the fire out themselves, but it got out of control. The six-year-old boy was seriously burned and sent to Parkland Hospital in Dallas.

"I was told that he had second degree burns, but I'm not sure about that because I have not gotten to speak with anyone yet. He had burns on his legs, his right side, his arm and his neck," explains Smith County Assistant Fire Marshal Connie McCoy-Wasson.

Authorities say 185 bales of hay and the barn were destroyed in the fire. Because the children were not supposed to be on the neighbor's property, their parents can be held responsible for the damages.
