Loop 49 Meeting

Another method of getting around in East Texas is under construction. The city hopes Loop 49 will ease some travelers' traffic woes and now, the Texas Department of Transportation wants to add an electric toll to the two-lane loop. Tonight, TX-DOT hosted a meeting in Smith County about the proposed toll. Preliminary estimates show a cost of about a dollar to travel the entire toll way. TxDOT says it's a way to speed up the construction process by 20 years.

Those at tonight's meeting said the toll, at least for the first phase, didn't bother them.

"Pro or con, I think that the advantage would be that it would get the project finished much faster. I think its very important that the first two segments that are already paid for be left toll free," said Smith County resident, Dr. Ron Pinkenburg.

The south section of Loop 49, between highways 155 and 69, is expected to be finished around December 2005.
