LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

An elderly East Texan, a railroad crossing, and an eastbound train made for some tense moments, as a 96-year old driver has a very close call with a train.

It happened around 9:20 on Thursday morning near Fredonia Street and Tyler Avenue in Longview.

"You can only imagine what he was thinking about when he got hit by the train," says Longview police officer Mike Grisham.

Witnesses say 96-year-old Tracy Cleveland Webb tried to beat an oncoming train across the tracks, when he realized it wasn't going to happen.

"I saw the train coming because the lights were flashing. It was almost like a delayed reaction because the driver realized the train was coming, but it was too late," says witness Joe Fuentes.

"When you hear a call like that, truck versus train, you expect the worst. We got on scene and realized the drivers 96 years old," Grisham says.

Fuentes, who works on Tyler Avenue, saw the collision as it was happening.

"He slammed on his brakes and stopped I'd say just about two feet across the track. Three seconds later I see the train appear and "bam!" he says.

Webb was able to stop with the front end of his truck just on the tracks. Another two feet forward and his truck would have been broadsided.

"It hit the right front quarter of the truck and spun it off the track. Luckily for him, the train was going fairly slow going to the yard," says Grisham.

Fuentes says Webb seemed to have time to back up to get out of the way of the train, but he never did.

"The impact was pretty severe but I knew that it was just the front of the truck by the way it spun," Fuentes says.

Webb was taken to the hospital for evaluation and is okay.

"This guy is extremely fortunate to be talking after a collision like this," Grisham says.

Webb was ticketed by Longview police for disregarding the crossing signs.
