Family of dead toddler had no history with CPS

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - A four-year-old girl is dead and a three-year-old girl in the hospital after the authorities found the toddlers unresponsive in a vehicle in southern Smith County on Wednesday afternoon.

The Smith County Sheriff's Office said the children were found inside a vehicle at a residence in the 18000 block of County Road 1100 near Flint. When EMS responded to the 911 call, they rushed the children to the hospital, where the four-year-old later died.

A Smith County justice of the peace said a preliminary investigation indicates that heat may have been involved in the death of the child. Authorities sent her body for an autopsy to determine the official cause of death.

The Department of Family and Protective Services is working with the sheriff's office on the investigation. Shari Pulliam with DFPS said that the department has no history with the family.

Pulliam urged parents and caretakers to keep their vehicles locked when parked at home.

"Children often enter these vehicles to play then cannot get out," said Pulliam. "Children should be properly supervised at all times knowing their whereabouts."

The sheriff's office said the details in the case are still unclear and the criminal investigative division is studying the incident.
