Tyler to celebrate Independence Day on July 5, not July 4

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

Private donations have helped the City of Tyler put on the annual Independence Day party this year at Lindsey Park, but the celebration will be held a day later than normal.

East Texan Ted Kamel says he's been going to the Tyler fireworks display since he was a child.

“My fondest memories of the Fourth of July fireworks celebration in Tyler was with my grandmother who would take all four of her grandchildren every year. It was like a holiday event for us. It was as traditional as Christmas and Thanksgiving,” he said.

When he heard the show was canceled earlier this month, he said, “I had an empty feeling in my stomach. It was kind of like well, there are going to be a lot of families that aren't going to know what to do.”

The City of Tyler says private donors have made this year's Independence Day celebration a reality.

“The thing that really made it possible, as far as the fireworks show, was that we had some individuals in the community that stepped up and said hey, you know, we'd like to help with that,” said Mark McDaniel, Tyler City Manager.

The city says they will host the event this year, but it will be on July 5, not July 4.

“All the companies that do the pyrotechnics have already been booked. There are some out there that we might be able to use, but we want to make sure that it's a really good show,” said McDaniel.

Ted says he's glad to know that he won't have to miss the fireworks this year.

“It's one of those traditions that you just don't want to see disappear. So, it makes sense that people would step up to make sure that there wasn’t an off year where it didn’t occur,” he said.

Lindsey Park opens at 6:00 a.m. and concessions will be available at around 2:00 p.m. The fireworks display will begin at dark and, this year, the city says parking is free.
