UPSHUR COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

A suspect charged in a string of armed robberies was sentenced Tuesday to three life sentences as a habitual offender, for aggravated robbery with use of deadly weapon.

Robby Bryan Stevens, 43, of Houston, pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated robbery on Monday, according to Upshur County Criminal District Attorney Billy Byrd.

Stevens also has charges of aggravated robbery pending in Gregg County court that includes a robbery at the China King restaurant in Longview. He was transported to the Gregg County jail from Upshur County jail on Tuesday.

Stevens pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated robbery from incidents that occurred in December and January. At the time of these offenses he had absconded from parole. He was on parole for assault against a public servant where in February 2001 he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for dragging Harris County (Houston) Deputy Thomas Bissell down the road with his car.

In that incident, two clerks witnessed a masked man later identified as Stevens entering the store with a gun, according to Byrd. The clerks retreated and were followed. Byrd said one dropped to the ground to pray and while the other held her head down, with her hands up begging. Stevens told them if they looked at him he would kill them. Stevens then demanded money and struck one clerk over the head with the gun, splitting the front of her head. That clerk then opened the safe while her head was bleeding and Stevens took an unspecified amount of cash. Stevens then put the clerks into the break room and threatened to kill them if they came out. Byrd said Stevens then fled out the front of the store and left in a car he had stolen prior to the robbery.

Stevens was also charged in a second, separate aggravated robbery at the Family Dollar Store in Diana. Byrd said Stevens hid behind a dumpster at that location and jumped out and attempted to steal money from a man who was walking to the store. Byrd said Stevens pointed the gun at the man and demanded his money or he would kill him.

The gun used in this incident was recovered along with some cash on a county road near Diana, according to Byrd.

Stevens was arrested at a Tyler motel in January by Tyler police and the East Texas Fugitive Task Force following a manhunt that included Longview Police Department, Gregg County Sheriff's Department, Upshur County Sheriff's Department, East Mountain Police Department and a Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter.
