NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

Texas Blueberry Festival planners are thankful for Angelina County blueberry growers. The festival's previous Nacogdoches County supplier shut down its operation.

Don't worry; your taste buds shouldn't notice any difference.

A sudden rain storm sent blueberry crews indoors Monday. It was too bad because there were lots of berries that still needed to be picked at Wood Berry Farm, north of Diboll.

"We have a bumper crop this year," said Julie Wood, the co-owner of Wood Berry Farm. "I think we're really peaking this week which is good for the festival."

Except for the pick-your-own berries, everything harvested at the Wood Farm from this day forward will supply Saturday's Texas Blueberry Festival in Nacogdoches. Festival die-hards may be concerned berries from across the Angelina River won't taste as good as the home grown variety in Nacogdoches County.

"Varieties grow differently in different areas, and I would think we would have probably the same varieties that they had in Nacogdoches," Wood said.

That works for the Nacogdoches Kiwanis Club as members prepare for Saturday's blueberry pancake breakfast.

"We donated the berries. Everything they could pick and wanted," Wood said, "They came twice, and so the pancake breakfast will be our blueberries."

Brookshire Brothers, the festival's blueberry supplier, is buying from a blueberry co-op. The first choice? East Texas berries, of course.

As soon as the berries were picked, they were sorted and placed in cold storage.

A Nacogdoches County farm will be open for customers to pick their own.

Berry flavors across county lines shouldn't make any difference, but if you go much farther, you may be in for disappointment.

"This is my daughter. She's from Oklahoma," said Patsy Raines, a Hudson Blueberry customer. And she picked in Oklahoma after she got home, and she said they wasn't near as good as the Texas ones."

The Blueberry Festival price is $25 for a flat of blueberries. They'll be sold in downtown Nacogdoches. For a complete schedule of all the events on tap for the 25th annual Blueberry Festival, click on this link.
