TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

A lightning strike destroyed a family's home and killed three dogs Monday morning.

Dixie Fire Chief Matt York said lightning sparked the fire at the home near Lindsey Park, southwest of Tyler. He says by the time firefighters arrived, three-fourths of the house was destroyed.

The fire flared up again Monday evening and Dixie firefighters responded once again to cool any remaining hotspots in the home. The fire chief said several people in that area have reported property damage due to lightning strikes, but he said this one was a direct, powerful hit.

Firefighters were able to salvage a few items from the house, including file cabinets with business papers and framed photos.

Neighbors said the lightning strike was so powerful, it shook their homes and windows.

The Smith County fire marshal said three dogs were killed in the fire. The fire marshal says the homeowners lost almost everything, but they do have insurance.
