RUSK COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

Classic war-birds are taking to the East Texas skies this weekend to continue honoring the 70th anniversary of D-Day. East Texas is participating by hosting the first annual air show and fly-in at the Rusk County airport.

Veterans of several eras were on hand to watch the acrobatics of stunt fliers and see classic war models. "Some of the aircraft you see out here were active during that time, so this is a big day for us, a day to reminisce and wax patriotic," says Rusk County airport director Ron Franks.

The free event was put on not only to entertain, but to honor veterans on this D-Day anniversary weekend. "No matter where you served, what you did, how long you served, everybody served and I feel it’s an important role," says an Iraq War army veteran.

"I hope it comes across in our air-show over the weekend. Gosh, what a debt we owe the people that fought for us," Franks says. Congressman Louis Gohmert was on hand to add his own thanks to veterans.

The impressive show of sport and vintage aircraft from all over Texas was a big draw for fans. For some, it was a chance to see planes they had not seen since World War II. "Oh its great, I really enjoy it. I flew the Stearman’s, the 13's," says World War II army air corps veteran Clarence Barnes.

For others, a chance to dream of one day flying themselves. "The reason I want to do it is to see how it feels to be high and to see how great it feels just to be free," says 10-year-old Ricky Peterson.

More than 1000 people came out to see the free air show today and to thank our local veterans.
