Hundreds of E. Texans wait in line to meet Dr. Ben Carson

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - A grassroots campaign called "Run Ben Run" is encouraging rising political star Dr. Ben Carson to run for president in 2016. Carson, a former pediatric surgeon, almost won a presidential straw poll at the Republican Leadership Conference earlier this week. Texas Senator Ted Cruz beat Carson by just one percentage point. However, Carson beat out Senator Rand Paul, Governor Rick Perry, and Mike Huckabee. Friday, Dr. Carson was in East Texas signing copies of his new book.

“When I found out he was going to be here in Tyler, only 100 miles away from home, there was nothing that was going to stop me. This is probably the best chance I’ll ever have to actually shake his hand and look him in the eye because I hope we put him in the White House,” said Mike Lazar.

Lazar said he's been a huge supporter of  Carson for years.

“When he went to the national prayer breakfast and basically set Obama straight, I thought 'That's the guy that we need to have, somebody that knows what's right and is willing to stand up for it,'” he said.

Nathan Bertasz said Dr. Carson’s background in medicine is what sets him apart from traditional politicians.

“Number one, I think we'd have an honest president. Like so many Americans right now, I’m very disappointed in our government and what's going on and I’m hoping he's the answer,” said Bertasz.

But all the hype seems for naught. At least for right now, because Dr. Carson said he has no desire to run for president.

“If I do get into that arena, I will not be a politician because I don't believe in political correctness. I don't believe in any of that garbage and I certainly don't believe in getting in bed with special interest groups. There's only one special interest group as far as I’m concerned, and that's the American people,” said Dr. Carson.

Among the first to arrive, Edward Hancock said he was very excited to meet Carson.

“It was crazy. It was quick. It was just one of those things. I was shaking his hand and I was like, 'I’m touching greatness,'” said Hancock.

Dr. Carson has said in other interviews that he does not want to run for president, but he has also said he hasn't ruled it out. Putting off the decision, and even denying the desire to run, seems to have become part of the process for many presidential candidates.
