SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

The Smith County Sheriff’s Office received a call at 5:00 am this morning of a white male victim who had been shot near the 14000 block of Highway 271 North. When deputies arrived, the victim was no longer at the location.

According to the SCSO, two black males and the white male allegedly went to the residence to burglarize it. The homeowners, a husband and wife, woke up when their dogs began barking.

The male homeowner observed the individuals outside of his garage, and proceeded to wake up his wife. They retrieved firearms, and returned to near the garage, where the male homeowner asked all of the individuals for their identification and told them he was calling the police.

A fight broke out in which the male homeowner and the white male were wrestling, and as the alleged burglar attempted to escape, both homeowners fired shots in his direction. The alleged burglar was struck in the buttocks area, most likely with a large caliber handgun.

The alleged burglar was taken to a Tyler hospital by private vehicle, where he is being treated for the gunshot wound and is undergoing surgery. The injuries do not appear to be life threatening.

Smith County Sheriff's Office crime scene officers and detectives are continuing the investigation at this time and are attempting to locate the two black males who escapes the scene.
