TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Repairs to the leaking Lake Tyler dam are now underway.

In April, the Tyler City Council approved an $8.23 million contract to repair the leak at the dam, which is on the south beach of Lake Tyler. The city's contractor is clearing the area in front of the dam to allow access to the construction site. Trucks are hauling in materials, and some areas of Lake Tyler may soon be closed off.

Greg Morgan, Managing Director of Utilities and Public Works for the City of Tyler, said the Lake Tyler dam has probably been leaking since it was built.

“There was a collection system actually designed and built into the dam to collect the seepage along the base,” he said.

In 2010, an inspection of the dam revealed some issues.

Morgan said, “We discovered something that we call boils. This is where clear water is bubbling up, but it's transporting soil.”

He said if left alone, there’s a possibility that the leak would affect the structural integrity of the dam.

“Right now, the contractor is moving materials onsite that he will need for the construction of the cofferdam. They are doing clearing so they can get equipment to the construction site and have a construction zone to build in,” said Morgan.

Now that it's finally being fixed, many lakegoers want to know what that means for them.

“The area that we normally allow swimming is being used to stage material, so there will be some restricted access to that as we go into the summer,” said Morgan.

Those who spend a lot of time at the lake are relieved the dam is being fixed.

“It's something that needs attention. It's been needing attention [and] funding needed to be there for them to be able to take care of it. They're doing it now, so it's wonderful,” said Jenny Alexander.

Morgan said other recreational activities, including boating and fishing, will not be affected. The construction on the dam is anticipated to last until the spring of 2015.
