LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas Marine is back home after being deployed in Afghanistan. When Lieutenant Marshall Jones returned home, he met, for the first time, one new young American he had been protecting: his baby girl.

“It was great. It was a feeling that every father has when they have a child, so it was a very extraordinary feeling,” Lt. Jones said.

Just three weeks after being deployed in September 2013, his wife, Cona, gave birth to their daughter Anna.

“I got to watch the birth on Skype. Obviously, I wasn't there, but I got to see that moment,” he said.

Jones, an artillery commander, graduated from UT-Tyler with an engineering degree.

"He just felt like he was suppose to be a part of something bigger of serving of serving God and our country and went into the Marines as an officer,” his mother Tracy Jones said.

Marshall Jones was welcomed home by a host of former military. But a few others stuck out in the crowd. His brother Cody was one of the first to give him a huge hug. Marshall is back in town to be best man this weekend in Cody's wedding. They both played college baseball at East Texas Baptist University before Cody went on to play minor league ball.

“The bond with my brother is indescribable in words. We've hunted and fished together. I love him dearly. That's the main reason I’m here is to support him,” Marshall said.

The welcome home event was held at Whataburger in Longview. When Lt. Jones was deployed, he just had one food request upon returning: a cheeseburger from Whataburger.

Jones will be spending the next three years in the United States training Marines.
