EAST TEXAS (KLTV) -

It is the beginning of the traditional summer boating and swimming season on East Texas lakes. The kids are out of school, it was a beautiful weekend day, and East Texas lakes were jammed with visitors.

Like most waterways, Lake Gladewater was alive with those coming out to enjoy boating and recreation. "Anytime we want to get away from the house, this is the place to go," says visitor Rodney Wade.

With summer break for school children, many parents see the lakes as a good alternative to traveling. "It's been great. Water is a little cool, but you get back on the beach and warm up. Not too far from home, everybody has a good time," says Jeff Hudson.

"It's amazing. My son's having a blast and we're just all relaxing. It has been a great day," says Elisha Hudson.

Of course the teenagers do what they always do: look for each other on the beach. Many just want to enjoy the weather before the stifling heat of summer is in full swing. "Oh its great. It's a wonderful place to be and the weather is great, not too hot," Wade says.

And a chance to let the kids burn off that youthful energy. "I think the kids. I think they always have more fun, they're tired wore out and need a nap," Elisha says.

Lake wardens ask that all boaters clean their boats before , and after, use in the lakes, to prevent the spread of zebra mussels and giant salvinia.
