Powell Resigns

President Bush's top cabinet official handed in his resignation this morning. Colin Powell has informed the President he will step down as Secretary of State as soon as his successor can be confirmed.

Powell has been joined by 3 other cabinet members. Powell is the third member to leave the President's cabinet after the first term, following announcements by Attorney General John Ashcroft, and Commerce Secretary Don Evans.

Education Secretary Rod Paige, Agriculture Secretary Ann Venemen and Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham are also leaving.

Powell had signaled he was willing to stay until the spring, but apparently, the President decided to get his second-term national security team in place more quickly. Powell will stay until his successor is confirmed by the Senate.

Secretary Powell has been one of the most popular members of the Bush Administration, but he has clashed with more hawkish advisors, including Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Vice President Cheney, and National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice.

The former military general will be remembered for his dramatic presentation before the United Nations in the weeks leading up to the war with Iraq, laying out evidence for Saddam Hussein's possession of weapons of mass destruction.
