Elyria teacher forgets to hang up, leaves insulting message about student

ELYRIA, OH (WOIO) -

Crestwood Elementary received an "Excellent" rating from the state board of education, but apparently you can also receive quite the berating here like a seven-year-old did from his teacher, who didn't realize her comments about him were recorded on this cell phone.

"The first thing I wanted to do was get my child out of that school," said Ashley Moore, the boy's mother. "I was very angry."

The teacher left the message on Moore's phone, forgot to hang up, turned to a colleague and begins her rant about the child, again not realizing her every word is being recorded.

"He has no common sense," stated the teacher on the recording. "He was seven in May and he's the biggest baby in my group. She still probably wipes his butt."

19 Action News won't identify the teacher because she has not yet had the chance to explain herself, but she's a kindergarten teacher.

After hearing the rant, the boy's grandfather now understands why the child no longer wants to go to school.

"We've had problems for three months now with him not wanting to be there," his grandfather said.

Both adults say the child's ability to learn has now been compromised.

"He's afraid, he does not want to go back to her," Moore said.

And one reason why Moore chose this elementary for her son was that excellent rating.

"A school that got an excellence report put on a great facade because I was thinking it was a great school," Moore said.

The teacher on the other end of the line has since offered an apology.

"The only reason she would be apologizing is that she got caught," Moore said.

Moore has since enrolled her child in another school and is seeking a face to face meeting with school district administrators.

 Statement from Elyria Schools:

"We regret the actions of this teacher. Her actions certainly don't represent the district's philosophy or the partnerships we have with our parents. We know that individuals can become frustrated but there is no excuse for what occurred and the comments this teacher made. We apologize for the hardship this caused the student and his family. The teacher regrets what she said and is apologetic. Her actions have been addressed by the district."

When the town of Gilmer is mentioned in relation to sports, the Buckeyes powerhouse football program immediately comes to mind. And that's fair considering they have won three state titles and racked up 13 double digit win seasons since 2000. But a small 1A school about nine miles away deserves some attention these days as well.
