ATHENS, TX (KLTV) - A firefighter's personal truck was stolen between 8:30 and 11 p.m. on Thursday while crews were battling a blaze at an Athens fertilizer storage facility.

The truck, a 2001 Toyota Tundra, was stolen from the Athens Fire Department parking lot on Thursday night while the truck's owner, Gene Lattis, was fighting the fire. The truck had a 10-foot trailer with a commercial lawnmower hooked up to it.

"It's kind of a raw deal, but I know I was doing the right thing when I came in... That's what I do," Lattis told KLTV.

Lattis was off-duty on Thursday night when he got a call to help with the fire in downtown Athens.

"I'm a driver and engineer here at the station so my responsibility is taking care of the engine - setting it up, and taking care of the water supply," Lattis said

He says he was still downtown when he heard his personal truck was missing.

"I went on to the scene and found out at 11 p.m. that my truck was not in the parking lot," said Lattis. "I thought the guys were giving me a hard time, but when we came back my truck wasn't here."

Lattis says he's received an outpouring of support, but still needs help finding his vehicle.

"It's surprising because you're not used to getting something from the community," Lattis said. "I'm used to giving back so its really nice that people are supportive."

Lattis' truck has an Athens Fire Department sticker on the front and an International Association of Firefighters sticker on the back.
