EAST TEXAS (KLTV) -
A good bugler is hard to find. Actually, a bad one is hard to find, too. There is a shortage of buglers across the country - so much so that a law was passed in 2000 that allowed recorded versions of "Taps" to be played.
At the Memorial Day ceremony in Gregg County, organizers chose to use a trumpeter. Bryan Hughes has been performing at Gregg County services for several years. He says the bugle is a difficult instrument to learn because the way to change notes is all in the lips.
At the Smith County ceremony, they managed to find someone who plays the trumpet bugle style.
"Some people don't recognize it, but somebody like myself would recognize the real sound of the trumpet and the more emotion you can put in it. It's an honor for any of us that could play at a service like this or a funeral. It's the most that we ever could do," said bugler John Weaver.
A ceremonial bugle has been released that plays a high-quality recording of taps. It can be placed inside a bugle or trumpet and used at military ceremonies and funerals.
