East Texas Baptist softball sees season come to an end
TYLER, TX (KLTV) -
ETBU Athletics Release
All great things must come to an end as #6 East Texas Baptist University fell to #20 the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, 5-0, in the elimination game of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. ETBU ends their season with 45 wins which is a program record and was ranked in the NFCA Top 10 all year.
“No coach wants their season to end, obviously, and we came out here to do exactly what we have been doing all year and put a good game forward. I thought we did a good job adjusting later in the game and hitting the ball hard but sometimes it’s just not your game,” says head coach Janae Shirley. “I couldn’t be more proud of this team and what they have accomplished and I couldn’t have asked for a better senior class as they have helped turn this program around.”
After scoring 11 runs the night before, ETBU couldn’t find their pitch to spark the offensive as Wisconsin-Whitewaters’ Bekka Houda held them to just five hits. Kayla Garcia and Mallory Westbrook each had two hits while Lacey Lindsey posted the other hit.
After one scoreless inning, Wisconsin-Whitewater put two runs on the board with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning. They then picked up their third run in the third inning on a bases loaded walk. Two solo home runs in the fourth inning extended their lead to five as they never lost the lead in the game.
Shelby Parker took the loss and ends the year with a 24-7 record as she recorded three strikeouts and five earned runs. Tawny Hank came in and shut down Wisconsin-Whitewater in the final 2.1 innings with four strikeouts and gave up just one hit.
Four seniors finish their career in Lacy Liles, Alyssa Romero, Hank, and Parker. Liles and Romero both leave with their name in several top 10 lists and were All-ASC first-team selections. Liles was a 2013 NFCA All-American and a two-time All-ASC selection. Hank made the All-ASC East first-team in 2013 and was the newcomer of the year. Parker sent several pitching records and earned several post season awards.
