We hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend. We’d like to ask all of our friends to join everyone at KLTV in remembering the real meaning of this important Holiday.
Memorial Day is a somber reminder that freedom is not free. Everything we have, everything we love, and every activity we’ll enjoy this Memorial Day weekend, is a gift to us from the millions of men and women who have served in our Armed Forces.
Honoring those who bravely answered the call of duty to our Country is important to all of us at KLTV. We have devoted countless hours on our newscasts to pay tribute to East Texas veterans, and those in active service.
Our Joan Hallmark has sat down with hundreds of veterans in our “Freedom Fighters” series of reports. We’ve heard amazing stories from men and women who put their lives at risk. All of them spoke with emotion and reverence about fellow soldiers whose lives were lost on battlefields around the world.
Memorial Day pays tribute to them.
Those of us who never put on a uniform will always feel a sense of helplessness on this holiday. No words can describe the debt we owe to the dead of our wars.
In a Memorial Day speech in 1982, President Ronald Reagan acknowledged how feeble words are as we give testimony to those who loved their countrymen enough to die for them. But Reagan went on to say we have a duty to them and to ourselves:
“Yet, we must try to honor them—not for their sakes alone, but for our own. And if words cannot repay the debt we owe these men, surely with our actions we must strive to keep faith with them and with the vision that led them to battle and to final sacrifice.” May 31, 1982
All of us have seen “Saving Private Ryan.” The movie’s key message was the scene of a dying captain telling the soldier he was sent to rescue to “earn this.”
A friend of mine who served in the military believes the movie’s message is a challenge to all of us; whether military or civilian, we all have a responsibility every day to “earn” the lives we have, made possible by lives that were lost.
So, please join us in remembering those who made the final sacrifice for us. Leave your comments below. Let’s get a conversation going about what Memorial Day means to all of us.
If you’ve had loved ones or friends in the military, tell us about them. Share a photo. Tell their story. And we would be honored to hear from veterans and active service members. All of you remind us every day that we live in the “home of the brave.” Thank you.
