UPSHUR COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -
The partially decayed bodies of eight pit bulls have been pulled from a creek in Upshur County today after neighbors reported a foul smell.
The dogs were found in a creek near Farm to Market 2685 between Gladewater and Gilmer. Upshur County officials are on the scene and a veterinarian is being brought in to determine the cause of death.
A neighbor waded into the creek to retrieve the bodies, some of which were floating inside trash bags. The people living in this quiet area are sickened by the gruesome discovery. "It really kind of touches you to see that many dogs dead, and, you know, it's some kind of abuse, fighting them or something," said resident Brandon Eitel.
Some of the bodies were partially burned, and had visible scars on them.It was a passing neighbor who actually looked into the creek and saw the dogs floating here; some of them in trash bags. Investigators at the scene said the bodies could have been there as long as four days. "This morning they were still here; my husband went ttownon, they were still here," said Erica Eitel. "They were just dumped in the creek right down from our house. Our children pass here on the bus, so they could see it. It is very heart-wrenching."
Brandon is upset about the dogs. He volunteered to wade into the creek to retrieve the bodies.
"Somebody had to do it. Nobody else was doing anything to get them out. I got a pair of waders, I'll go out and do it," he said.
"Every time he would bring one up and pull it up with the tractor; it's very sad," Erica said. "It makes you wonder about your neighbors."
A necropsy will be performed on each to determine the cause of death. The dogs are also being checked for implanted microchips in order to help identify the owner or owners.
We have a crew on the way to the scene and will provide updates as they become available.
