Investigators with the San Augustine County Sheriff's Office are investigating a fatal shooting incident in which a 16-year-old boy shot his father in the chest after the boy's parents were involved in a heated argument late Wednesday night.
Chief Deputy Gary Cunningham of the San Augustine County Sheriff's Office said SACSO deputies responded to a 911 call about a shooting at a home on County Road 3120 at approximately 10 p.m. Wednesday.
When deputies arrived on the scene, they found Dalton West, 52, dead as result of a single gunshot wound to his chest. Pct. 3 Justice of the Peace Billy Williams pronounced West dead at the scene.
The deputies learned that the West and his wife had been involved in a heated argument when their 16-year-old son retrieved a gun from inside the home and confronted West.
"At some point, a single round discharged into West's chest," Cunningham said.
Cunningham said SACSO investigators have interviewed West's family, and the incident is still under investigation.
"As of now, there's not enough for criminal charges," Cunningham said.
