TROUP, TX (KLTV) - Recess was not playtime Wednesday for a group of East Texas elementary students. Instead, they spent their time selling lemonade to help raise money for a special employee at their school.

“We're selling lemonade for Miss Heatherdawn because she has a tumor in her brain and we haven't seen her for the past couple of days. She has a neck brace, so I hope she gets better,” said Blake Henson, a second grader.

Just a few weeks ago, doctors discovered that Heatherdawn McCullum, a custodian at Troup Elementary School, has a mass of fluid in her brain.

“At first, they were just trying to say it was carpal tunnel, but I knew it was something else once I started passing out and then I got admitted to the hospital for passing out. That's when they ran MRIs and CAT scans and found the fluid in my brain and my spinal cord,” said McCullum.

McCullum said she'll be having surgery soon and won't be able to work for more than six months.

The second graders said they wanted to raise money for McCullum's surgery because she's very special to them.

“She's nice and she helps us a lot,” said second grader Tucker Howell.

“It makes me feel good because I like helping people and on the inside, it makes my heart feel better,” said Bailey Blanton, another second grader.

McCullum said she was astonished when she heard that students wanted to sell lemonade to help raise money for her.

“When they told me that they wanted to even do that, I cried when one of the teachers told me. Just for the kids to even think about that, you know,” said McCullum.

Troup Elementary School's second grade class raised more than one thousand dollars. All of that money will be donated to help fund Heatherdawn's surgery. If you would like to help, you can donate to the medical expense account for Heatherdawn McCullum at any Austin Bank.
