LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -
More information only leaves more questions about the 34-year-old woman who was posing as a teen at an East Texas school.
Charity Johnson was arrested on Tuesday by Longview Police after the woman she lived with suspected Charity was lying about her identity. Many people who knew Charity thought she was a 15-year-old high school sophomore named "Charite Stevens."
While jail records indicate that Johnson is 31-years-old, Longview Police released a statement Thursday that she may actually be 34.
A Longview family that put a roof over Charity's head for two months last year is now more confused than ever. Renald Lewis says her son met Charity on the city bus and they started dating.
"I was trying to help her out. She said she didn't have anywhere to go, so I invited her to stay until they got up on their feet," explains Lewis.
"We felt sorry for her. She didn't have anywhere to go. She was staying in a shelter and my brother didn't want his girl staying in a shelter," adds Lewis' daughter, Shanadia Ford.
In the few months the Lewis family knew Charity, they say she changed her age from 20 to 19 to 18. When they started asking questions, they say she moved out.
"We asked her about [her age and identification] and she got mad because we were trying to figure out what was going on and who she was... but she was a nice girl. She was cool and sweet," recalls Lewis.
They're not the only ones who say Charity seemed like a sweet girl. An austin woman called KLTV after seeing our story about Charity. She says she knew Charity nearly a decade ago. The woman says Charity lived just north of Austin in Pflugerville and worked as a babysitter in 2005. The woman adds that she thought Charity was in her early 20s back then and that Charity was good with kids.
The Lewis family also says Charity was good with kids. They say she told them she came from a foster home and had briefly lived in Austin.
"It's like a mystery or something. You really don't know who she is," says Lewis.
Who is Charity Johnson? It's just one of so many questions people want answered.
