Mahomes considered top all-around athlete

WHITEHOUSE, TX (KLTV) - On the football field, basketball court or the mound, when Whitehouse senior Patrick Mahomes has the ball in his hands, good things usually happen.

"I can't really just tell you what makes it easy for me to go and do all three," said Mahomes.  "It's just me playing my whole life."

Mahomes' senior year was sensational. The Wildcats quarterback was named the AP Texas State Football Player of the Year.  He was the District 16-4A MVP in basketball. Now Mahomes could be a high pick in the upcoming Major League Baseball Draft.

"I have been blessed to be around some great athletes," said Whitehouse head football coach Adam Cook.  "Some have gone on to play in the professional ranks. But never one that was able to balance all the different sports. To still be able to come out and compete at such a high level like he does, but not only on the field but then also in the class room."

Maxpreps.com, a national high school sports website, recently claimed Mahomes may be the best all around athlete in the nation.  Mahomes has also was featured by Yahoo Sports.

"It's hard because we live in East Texas and we don't get to go out and see everyone," said Cook.  "But the numbers don't lie."

Mahomes thanks his teammates.

"It helps being on great teams at Whitehouse," said the senior quarterback and pitcher.  "It helps playing with my friends and we go out there and get a lot wins. That helps out with getting athlete of the year."

Mahomes has signed with Texas Tech and is expected to play football and baseball in Lubbock.  That could change after the upcoming baseball draft June 5.

"It would be hard for me to go (pro)," said Mahomes.  "But if the opportunity comes and I think it's the best decision for my future, I would. But it's got to be the perfect opportunity. Right now I'm just looking at Tech and getting to go there."

Not bad options to have.  Cook is excited to see where Mahomes ends up.

"We wait in great anticipation to see what the future holds for Patrick."
