LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

A fiery crash had bystanders jumping in to pull a driver from a burning truck.

Saturday night, Longview police say a pickup truck was speeding through a turn lane and hit a light pole on Loop 281 and McCann road. Police and fire units got to the scene as quickly as possible with the vehicle reported burning.

"The truck overturned and rolled on its side and alcohol is believed to be a factor," says Longview police officer Kristie Brian.

Police say the driver approached the turn lane at such a high rate of speed he went straight into the signal light pole crashing out. Almost immediately passers by got out to aid him.

"The witnesses stopped and helped him get out of the vehicle," Brian says.

Officials say the driver took a corner too fast, going through the turn lane , amazingly missing traffic that was passing through at the time.

There was a wild scramble to get to the driver as flames began to appear, and he was removed from the truck just before flames covered the cab.

"Thanks to all the people the witnesses that took time to try to get this guy out of his truck, it could have ended tragically had they not been there to help," says Brian.

The driver is listed in critical condition, but he is expected to survive.

The drivers name has not been released at this time.

Officials say they do not know whether he was wearing a seat-belt during the wreck.
