An East Texas woman drowned Sunday after jumping into a pond.
WINONA, TX (KLTV) -
Around 5:20 p.m. on Sunday, Smith County Sheriff’s Office deputies and detectives responded to a 911 call regarding a 40-year-old woman who jumped out of a boat into a private pond. The pond, located in the 13500 block of Highway 155, lies in the northeastern part of Smith County near Winona.
According to the caller, the woman jumped into the water to swim. After a few moments of swimming, she called for help and went under water. Deputies arrived on scene within minutes and were joined by game wardens of the Texas Parks and Wildlife, Winona Fire Department, Noonday Fire Department, and the Smith County dive team.
Smith County sheriffs tell us that at 7:00 p.m. the first responders were able to recover the body and Justice of the Peace Precinct 4, Mitch Shamburger, pronounced the victim and ordered an autopsy.
The identity of the victim has not been released at this time. The investigation is ongoing and more information will be released as it becomes available.
