UNION GROVE, TX (KLTV) - Over 70 animals were seized from an Upshur County home on Thursday morning.

Upshur County Constable Gene Dolle said 64 dogs, 6 cats, and 1 horse were taken from a home on N. Point Pleasant Road in Union Grove. Residents were using their home as a type of shelter but became overwhelmed attempting to care for so many animals.

Dolle said multiple agencies worked together to execute the seizure. Some of the dogs seized were very aggressive and many were in poor or moderate condition.

The individuals who lived at the home were renting the property and had fallen behind on their payments. Dolle originally went to the property to serve an eviction notice. The occupants would not allow him to perform an inspection of the home. Dolle contacted Scott Holloway with the Longview Humane Society and the residents allowed Holloway to perform an inspection. The inspection was followed up by Thursday's seizure.

The dogs and cats were taken to the SPCA in Dallas. The horse was taken to Safe Haven Horse Rescue in Gilmer. A court hearing in the case has been scheduled for May 16. At that time, the occupants of the home will have a chance to reclaim the animals, but the decision is ultimately up to a judge.

Dolle added that the seizure was executed so well thanks to a team effort from Longview Animal Control Officer Jacquie Lynch, the Longview Humane Society, Gladewater Animal Control Officer Mark Ennison, East Mountain Police Department and Upshur County Constable Stanley Jenkins. The SPCA was also on scene with around ten people, including two veterinarians and two veterinary technicians.
