EAST TEXAS (KLTV) - An East Texas game warden who was shot while hunting off-duty is one step closer to making a full recovery.

Chris Fried was shot in the chest last December in Sulphur Springs. Fried is a game warden in Cooper, Texas. He was bow hunting near the Cooper Wildlife Management Area when the incident happened. Investigators say Fried left his deer stand to investigate suspicious activity. After the shooting, Fried used his cell phone to call for help.

Fried was flown to a Dallas hospital where he went through several surgeries. His latest surgery was just last week. Fried's wife posted several pictures of his recovery online.

Two men were arrested and charged with the shooting, 18-year-old Eli Stephens and 21-year-old Dalton Haddix of Delta County.
