Student arrested for allegedly bringing a weapon to school

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

An 11-year-old Shreveport student was arrested and charged after police said he brought weapons to school.

Shreveport police said a teacher at Alexander Learning Center saw the student playing with a stun gun around 1 p.m. Monday. After she reported it, the student was taken out of the classroom and arrested. He was also carrying a utility-style knife, police said.

A retired Caddo Parish teacher did not want to be identified, with 30 years of teaching under her belt, she said she'd have done the same thing.

"It needs to be dealt with immediately, and then can be sorted out later, but you can't wait to see what he's going to do," she said. "I hate that he has to go through this, but it may be a bigger message that may need to happen so that here at the end of the school year we understand that we're not messing with that stuff."

Scott Sills does not have a child at Alexander, but is a parent of a 3-year old, and says that it's a scary situation, "I'd be terrified, really.

"I definitely think something needed to be done about it," he said. "I don't know if arresting him was the right thing to do, but as far as taking him out of the school, I think that was a good thing to be done."

The stun gun, which was not the popular TASER type gun, is a considered a weapon by Caddo Parish Schools. Anyone who brings one onto campus is subject to legal action, suspension or expulsion from school.

    An East Texas boy scout has achieved his goal of raising enough money to purchase 31 bullet proof vests in 31 days. 13 year old Jaxon Holland was raising the funds for his Eagle Scout project and surpassed his goal. Holland raised $18,000 which will cover 34 vests plus accessories. The vests will be donated to the Wood County Sheriff’s office.
