SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

Multiple law enforcement agencies combed over a crime scene at a home in Smith County on Tuesday morning, investigating a burned body found in an backyard structure.

The Texas Rangers, along with the state fire marshal's office and the Smith County sheriff's office arrived at the home early this morning on the 11000 block of County Road 495, near Tyler Pipe.

Sheriff Larry Smith said a man's burned body was found in a detached building behind the home by Lindale firefighters, as they were putting out the final hot-spots at the site of the structure fire late Monday night.

"We've got a lot of legwork left to do on this investigation," said Smith. "We're looking into potential of foul play, but some of evidence we have right now doesn't point to foul play. Like I said, we're still in infancy stages of investigation."

"If it is the victim we believe it to be, it is a resident of the home," said Smith.

Investigators used shovels and sifting screens in an attempt to uncover any additional evidence in the burned out building. A K9 unit was also used in the investigation.

Smith said that the woman they believe to be the man's wife was out-of-state at the time of the fire, but is on her way back Tuesday night and will be interviewed by authorities.

The sheriff's office added that the deceased man's body had been sent off to Dallas for a full autopsy as of Tuesday afternoon.
