LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

This year's Centennial High School prom king and queen looked a little different than what you'd usually find ruling over court.

It's good to be king, and Skyler Galliher knows that firsthand. She ran for the crown and, to the surprise of many and dismay of some, won.

She said the idea came to her when her friend Summer Brother said she wanted to be prom queen.

"I am thrilled. I am so excited to be prom king. She's [Brother] like, ‘Well, you should run with me.' And I said, ‘What?' And she's said, ‘As prom king.' It [started out] as a joke," Galliher said.

Galliher said her gender-nonspecific first name helped her to get on the first ballot.

"When they found out that I was a girl, student council and teachers added more names to offset the numbers," she said.

The girls said there was even more pushback from parents and some fellow students.

"Once people were getting angry, I was like, ‘Wow, this is really a big deal to some people.' I was like, ‘We should definitely go all-out with this thing,'" Brother said.

The two started a grassroots campaign and ended up winning a lot of people over.

Galliher's father said he's not surprised she jumped through hoops to become prom king.

"She always stands for something. Skyler has very strong ideals about what's right and what's wrong," Jeff Galliher said.

Skyler Galliher said it was worthwhile.

"It turns out I motivated a lot of students at my school, and that's what made me want to do it even more," she said.

Skyler and Summer each had her own date to the prom, but they were named king and queen.
