TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Tyler Independent School District athletic director Rod Kaspar has submitted his resignation.  Kaspar says the school board will accept his resignation at a board meeting Tuesday morning. Kaspar plans to retire and remain living in Tyler.

"There just come a time, when you know it's right (to retire)," said Kaspar.  "We really love Tyler and we plan on staying here.  You'll still see me around."

Kaspar was hired by Tyler ISD in May of 2011.  He previously worked as assistant athletic director at McKinney ISD.  Under Kaspar's watch, Tyler ISD hired current John Tyler football coach Ricklan Holmes and Tyler Lee head football coach Darrell Piske.

"I've really had a great three years here," said Kaspar.  "The program's a lot better now than what it was when I first came in. I've met a lot of great coaches and worked with a lot of great coaches in here in town. I've met a lot of great people and made some great friends. It's going to be exciting to be apart of Tyler on the community side instead of the athletic side."

Despite retirement, the 61 year old would not rule out a return to coaching or high school athletics.

"The itch will never go away," said Kaspar.  "But I'm in a position now, if something comes across my desk and I want to take a look at it I will. If not, I can pass it by and continue doing what I'm doing."

Kaspar will finish his contract through the end of the school year.
