24 people injured in stampede at MGM after Mayweather win
LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
Twenty-four people were transported to the hospital from MGM after being trampled in a crowd of panic after a loud noise occurred Saturday night.
Clark County Public Information Director Erik Pappa said the Clark County Fire Department responded to the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino initially for a report of a gunshot victim near the food court but upon arrival discovered no such victim existed. Firefighters determined that a temporary wall near the Starbucks had fallen over, causing a loud bang. The noise happened as crowds were exiting from the Grand Garden Arena, creating a panic and multiple people to get knocked down and trampled.
Twenty ambulances were sent to the scene from AMR, along with two supervisors, Pappa said. Triage and transports areas were set up where 50 people were assessed by EMS. Twenty-four people were transported to area hospitals.
Pappa said a majority of the injuries were minor traumatic injuries, such as strained and sprained ankles, back injuries, injuries associated with being stepped on and one leg laceration.
The CCFD wrapped up this incident at approximately 1 a.m.
