Media Release from UT-Tyler Athletics

The No. 1 seed and No. 2 nationally-ranked UT Tyler softball team scored three runs over the last four innings, coming back to defeat rival East Texas Baptist 3-2 in game 11 of the American Southwest Conference Softball Championship.

With the win, the Patriots (40-3) will now head to the ASC Championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Tyler.

UT Tyler found itself down 2-0 after the third inning, as East Texas Baptist's (37-6) Jayme Perez and Alyssa Romero went back-to-back with solo homeruns.

The Patriots cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth, as Whitney Burt singled-in Shelby Shelton who reached on a double, making the score 2-1.

In the sixth, UT Tyler's Jackie Mendez tied the game with a solo homerun of her own, tying the score at 2-2 and giving the Patriots new life.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, sophomore Vanessa Carrizales would play hero, singling in Lauren Robenalt to give UT Tyler the 3-2 lead.

Pitcher Kelsie Batten put a cap on her stellar relief performance, picking up the win after relieving starter Alaina Kissinger in the third inning.

Batten allowed just one hit in five innings of work, not allowing a run to the Tigers.

ETBU went onto to win its elimination game against Louisiana College on Saturday night. So, we will have a rematch between the Patriots and Lady Tigers in the championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
