SFA's Brad Underwood talks about his decision to stay

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - So how close was Stephen F. Austin men's basketball coach Brad Underwood from being one and done at SFA?

Well in speaking with the head man on Friday, Underwood said he would take that answer to his grave, but did confirm that talks with Marshall and Southern Mississippi went the furthest.

Underwood who helped guide the Jacks to their first ever NCAA Tournament victory and best season in program history spoke to East Texas News on Friday about the reason he listened to other colleges, but in the end decided to stay with Stephen F. Austin.

"We needed to go through the process and I needed to go through the process," Underwood said. "With a lot of communication with a lot of different people both here and there and at the end of the day, this was right."

Underwood added,"You know trying to go special places here at Stephen F excites me a great deal. We have everything pulling in the right direction to continue to grow and that's what ultimately was a deciding factor for me. "

The last time the Whitehouse Wildcats qualified for a 7-on-7 state tournament was 2014, and they came one win short from taking it all.  But since their runner-up finish the Wildcats have failed to return to College Station; until now. We caught up with the Whitehouse crew this evening as they used the last of their league play to prepare for state.  The Wildcats will open up pool play against Westwood Round Rock at 2 p.m on Friday.  Copyright 2017 KLTV.
