Get ready, Longview: AlleyFest and Historic Depot Days taking place May 9-10

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - From the City of Longview:

The City of Longview and Longview Main Street are joining forces to celebrate AlleyFest & Historic Depot Days on May 9 – 10, 2014. This year, AlleyFest is partnering with the City of Longview to celebrate the grand opening of the renovated Historic Train Depot. In addition to the annual AlleyArt, MusicFest, KidsFest, and AlleyRun activities, the event will also feature tours of the historic depot, tours of the Amtrak exhibit train, tours of the historic Central Fire Station, an antique car show, and other 1940's era activities.

In addition to the train-themed activities, AlleyFest & Historic Depot Days will include a historic remembrance of life in Longview when the train depot opened in 1940. For instance, the Longview Public Library will show several movies from the era, including Gone with the Wind, the Wizard of Oz, and others. In addition, there will be Depot Days-themed events from community organizations like the Gregg County Historical Museum, Longview World of Wonders, and First Baptist Church among others. Other community organizations are invited to participate in the festivities as well.

The majority of activities will be held along Tyler Street from High Street to Green Street, but will also include activities along Center Street, Fredonia Street, and at the Historic Depot area on Pacific Avenue. A free shuttle will provide transportation during the event between downtown and the train depot.

The two-day festival will be held from noon – 11 p.m., Friday, May 9, and 10 a.m. – 11 p.m., Saturday, May 10, 2014. KidsFest activities and Historic Depot Days tours will be held from noon – 6 p.m. on Friday, and 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Saturday. AlleyFest tickets are $10 per person, but are available for half price before 5:00 p.m. AlleyFest tickets are free for children 12 and under.

The Historic Longview Train Depot has been the heart of transportation in Longview for over 74 years. The renovated facility is at the center of a new transportation hub that brings together Longview's public transportation options of Amtrak train, Longview Transit, and Greyhound. In 2010, the City of Longview received grant funds to complete a major renovation to the historic structure.

"Longview's history is directly tied to the development of the railroad, and the Historic Longview Train Depot has played a very significant role in the development of Longview. By partnering our Depot Days event with AlleyFest, we are excited to take a look back at what life was like in 1940 and celebrate the importance of trains to Longview," says Laura Hill, City of Longview Director of Community Services.
