John Tyler In Search Of New Head Football Coach

Years of state rankings and playoff success have turned into frustration and losses over the past few years. As a result, John Tyler High School has decided to make a change atop it's football program. TISD Athletic Director Danny Long announced Kelvin Ratliff has been re-assigned within the district. The re-assignment comes after Ratliff posted a 6-24 overall record in three years at John Tyler, including 0-18 in district action. Long talked this afternoon about what went into the schools decision.

"You know, several things," said Long, "lack of participation, you know, several things in regards to things last year that we wanted to improve upon that we just didn't feel like that we were really going in the right direction and so we just felt like it was time to make a change."

Ratliff broke the news to his players at noon on Monday. Long, a former head coach at Jacksonville High School, says he will personally oversee the players off season program beginning Tuesday.

"It's about the kids at John Tyler High School," said Long. "And there are a tremendous amount of very talented kids that are coming back next year and I don't want them to be cheated one second. This is an unfortunate decision that I felt had to be made and I don't want the kids to suffer, so I'll be over there every day from whenever they get there, 11:15, 11:30 until they finish their athletic period and then I'm going to come back here and be the athletic director."

Long says he is not interested in the coaching position. He is scheduled to meet with the remaining John Tyler coaches Tuesday morning. Assistant coach Michael Johnson will serve as interim head coach. As for a new head coach, Long says the search begins immediately, for the best person for the job, regardless of race.
