Rising coaching star returns to East Texas for HOC Bowl Banquet

Posted: Updated:
TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Some of the best high school football players and coaches from East Texas came together Monday night for the Chick-fil-A Heart of Champion Bowl Banquet at Green Acres Baptist Church.  Players and coaches had a chance to hear from an East Texas success story.

The featured guest speaker was Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris. The edgewood native is a rising coaching star.

After winning back to back state titles as the head coach of Lake Travis High School in Austin, Morris made the jump to college football in 2010.  Now he's one of the top assistants in the college game.

Morris believes some of the best coaches in the country, are coaching high school football.

"I've said it many a time, you'll get your tail fired as a high school head coach in Texas quicker than an offensive coordinator at Clemson," Morris.  "Obviously I'm fortunate to be where I'm at. You look at Art Briles, Gus Malzahn, a very dear friend of mine. You look at Coach Pruitt that just took the defensive coordinator job from Florida State to Georgia. Five years ago he was coaching high school football in Alabama. What it does is give guys that have ambition and desire to get into college coaching, a chance."

Morris' message to players and coaches Monday night, if you're willing to work hard, there's a place for you in college football.
