Record number of East Texas pool players head to national tournament

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - A record 19 members from the East Texas American Poolplayers Association are headed to the national singles and doubles championship in Las Vegas. Thousands of dollars will be on the line, for multiple skill levels.

East Texan Kathy Tingler has only played pool for the past four years, but she took third place in the 2013 national tournament.

"I didn't know how to play," said Tingler.  "I did not know how to play when I first started. I told them if I can get third, anybody playing can do well. You just have to practice."

The event begins Wednesday.  Several local pool players credit East Texas APA league operator John Ervin, for the growing number of East Texans in the national tournament.

"You have all types of East Texas players going from low skill to high skill players in different groups," said Ervin.  "It's great for them to compete in the national title."

2014 East Texas APA Vegas Bound Players:

Will Hill, Brittany Williams, Suni Whittaker, Daniel Tokar, Dana Hillman, Shannon Detro, Marcia Huckaby, Alex Garner, Brandton Helm, Nicole Norton, Daniel Keesey, Gary & Debbie Bailey, Mark Smith, Andy Urban, Kathy Tingler, Terri Urban, Rhett Kramer, Tiffany Waters.

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>

The last time we talked about the Kilgore Bulldogs, quarterback Buddy Jackson and wide receiver Jonathan Shepherd were apart of the 800-meter relay team that won gold at the 2017 state track meet. But today they are back in the pads, and looking to turn their speed into touchdowns.  Competing in District 9-4A, Kilgore has always had a strong run game that helped them become the 2016 District Champs.
