UT-Tyler softball clinches regular season conference title

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Media Release from UT-Tyler Athletics

The UT Tyler Patriots won the American Southwest Conference regular season softball championship with a 2-0 victory over Louisiana College Friday afternoon at Suddenlink Field.

The Patriots (36-2), ranked No. 1 nationally, had already earned the right to host the ASC Championship Tournament beginning Wednesday, but today’s win gives them the regular season nod. UT Tyler had previously won three ASC East Division titles (2010, 2012, 2013), but with the conference’s move away from a division format this season, the Patriots earn the overall regular season title.

Friday’s game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when Whitney Burt was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs.  Shelby Shelton smacked a two-RBI single to center field which scored Lexi Ackroyd and Karly Geiger.

Shelton and Lauren Robenalt were both 2-for-3 on the afternoon, while Mel Hinojosa and Christa Hartnett also had hits.

Kelsie Batten improved her season record to 23-2 with the complete-game, six-strikeout win. Madison Vige took the loss for LC, giving up six hits across five and two-third inning of work.

The Wildcats drop to 20-12 with the loss.

The series and the regular season for both teams wraps up tomorrow with a Senior Day double header slated to begin at 1 p.m. in Tyler.
