LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

Local firefighters are remembering the first K-9 officer to be a part of the Longview Fire Department.

Longview Fire Department K-9 officer 'Tori' recently passed away.

With all the honors accorded to a human officer, Tori was remembered by firefighters and city officials for her stellar service in a ceremony at Longview Fire central station.

"Dogs can sense things that others can't. Tori, who served 3 years, had numerous convictions through her actions as part of a K-9 team," says Longview fire marshal Johnny Zackary.

Tori became a certified arson investigation K-9 in 2003.

"If we get called out, we'd go to work , she was by my side every single day. Thats what they're trained to do, is that job in hand, whether it be looking for an accelerant or sniffing for an accelerant," says Tori's handler Jimmy Purcell.

Purcell was Tori's partner and eventual owner, and says Tori served with all the dedication of any officer.

"They do amazing things to for communities to help in investigations," he says.

"It is a loss because of the bond and the commitment and the work that they've accomplished and the deep friendship thats developed during that time," Zackary says.

The ceremonial ringing of the station's fire bell was held , signifying that a firefighter is in quarters.

"It was a wonderful service. She's touched a lot of peoples lives," Purcell says.

"We do this ceremony to honor and memorialize the loss of this very important part of our service," says Zackary.

Tori retired from the Longview Fire Department in 2006.

She was a beloved member of her handler, Jimmy Purcell's family for 11 years.
