Texas Comin' on Strong Tour stops in Tyler

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - The Texas Comin' on Strong Tour hits 12 cities over 30 days. One of those stops was Thursday night in Tyler.

Texas head football coach Charlie Strong had a chance to meet and greet East Texas Longhorn fans who are already impressed with the new head man.

"Him coming through Tyler like this, its just like a big pep rally, we love it," Jimbeaux Whitaker said. "It's a great thing." Strong added, "Its been fun just seeing the emotion and passion of our fans and just watching them come out to just hear what their coach has to say."

Coach Strong has had a lot to say on his first few stops of the tour. The first year head man has already said the Longhorns will not play for a national title in 2014.

"Its April, we just finished spring ball, lets get it to where we have the summer, then we have preseason camp, then we get to the competition," Strong said.

Believe it or not, U-T fans are fine with Strong telling it like it is.

"He is just being honest, but seeing how quickly he turned around Louisville after a two win win before he arrived to a powerhouse before he left, I can accept it," Darrell Grayer said.

The biggest reason why, Strong is changing the culture in Austin. The players have had to adapt to new team rules and even earn the right to throw up the traditional hook em horns hand gesture.

"There is a standard at the university so we have to continue to make it rise and make it to where we have to go improve and go get better ourselves," Strong said.

With the last 10 win season and Big 12 title coming back in 2009, Texas fans admit change was needed. The burnt orange faithful thinks coach Strong is the man to turn things around.

"Charlie had talked about how he wants to change this kids into men and not necessarily football players or whatever and I appreciate him saying that," Ben Allen said.

George Hightower added,"Seeing what he has done and how he has turned things around, getting things back in order, I'm excited for this new season and the future of the Texas Longhorns."

In the latest high school football AP Poll, only two East Texas teams are still ranked. Undefeated Carthage is at number one, and 7-0 Van checks in at number eight. Gilmer, Henderson, and Kilgore can thank the top ranked Bulldogs for no longer receiving state wide recognition. On a serious roll and atop the "District of Doom" standings, the defending Class 4A Division I champions have outscored their opponents by nearly 150 points..
