UPSHUR COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -
A Wood County man was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday after a jury found him guilty of aggravated sexual assault of a child.
The Upshur County District Attorney's Office said 35-year-old Jason Wayne Belcher of Mineola was found guilty of sexually assaulting a six-year-old child. After Belcher was found guilty on Wednesday, he waived his right to a jury sentencing. Judge Lauren Parish decided to hand down a life sentence.
Belcher will not be eligible for parole for at least 30 years.
The sexual abuse occurred in January 2012 at a home in Upshur County. The child's mother was at work while the incident took place.
During the trial, the jury heard of Belcher's previous conviction of aggravated sexual assault of a child in Dallas County in 1999. In addition, the jury heard evidence from another child who cried out against Belcher in February 2014. The child reported to a teacher at a local school district that Belcher had been raping her for several years.
